Today we celebrate The World Skyscrapers Day. The 3rd of September was declared the day of skyscrapers intentionally since the great American architect, Louis Henry Sullivan, who revolutionized the world view of modern architecture, celebrates his birthday today.
Louis Sullivan was the founder of contemporary aesthetics. Due to his contribution, the used for centuries bricks have been replaced by steel skeletons. Thanks to this revolution, buildings could climb without limits as to their height. The first such skyscraper was the Home Insurance Building with 42 m high, built in Chicago in 1885. The solutions applied in the skyscraper’s construction constituted a huge step towards modern, aesthetic and functional architecture, which is still used nowadays.
